Society for Buddhist-Christian StudiesThe Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies was founded in 1987 to provide an ongoing organization for those committed to study, reflection, interchange and practice arising out of Buddhist-Christian encounter. Following a pattern of international conferences in Hawaii (1980, 1984) and Berkeley (1987), the Society co-sponsors major international conferences approximately every four years in conjunction with various academic and religious institutions. Previous conference were held in Boston in 1992, Chicago in 1996 and in Tacoma, Washington, in 2000. Each November, the Society meets one day prior to the annual national meeting of the American Academy of Religion. These meetings provide a regular opportunity for Buddhist-Christian interchange between major international meetings. The Society also develops resources helpful for Buddhist-Christian encounter and facilitates more specialized or regional meetings. The purposes of the Society are: 1. To serve as a coordinating body supporting activities related to the comparative study of, and the practical interaction between, Buddhism and Christianity, whether by groups or individuals. 2. To encourage those who report on Buddhist-Christian dialogue and comparative study to employ analytical and theoretical tools and to set their discussion within the framework of our larger human history. 3. To be as inclusive as possible in all its activities, seeking a balance with regard to geography, ethnicity, age, sex, denomination or lineage, cultural tradition, and leadership in both academic and religious institutions, and in the public and private sectors. PUBLICATIONS Membership in the Society includes a subscription to the journal Buddhist-Christian Studies and the Newsletter. The Journal is published annually, making available new and important contributions to Buddhist-Christian exchange. The Society's Newsletter is published twice a year. It includes news and announcements about many events around the globe that would be of interest to Society members as well as ongoing news about the Society and the events that it sponsors.
