The College Theology SocietyThe College Theology Society is a professional society of college and university professors. Founded in 1953 as a Roman Catholic organization of lay and religious teachers of undergraduate theology, the CTS today has a membership of over 1,000 college and university professors throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. While maintaining its roots in the Roman Catholic tradition, the Society is increasingly ecumenical in its membership and concerns. In its publications and Annual Meetings, it focuses on developing the academic disciplines of theology and religious studies, on assisting college and university teachers to teach their discipline effectively, and on relating religion to life. The Annual Convention provides a forum for the exchange of interest and ideas on a national level. It is held the first week of June at a college or university of one of the Society's members. This makes it possible for members to attend at a modest cost and contributes to building a sense of community in the Society. Awards are made for outstanding books and articles by the CTS members and for the year's best student essay. Members actively participate in the shape of the convention by sharing papers in the working groups and consultations: American Life and Catholic Thought, Approaches to Teaching Religion, Art Literature and Religion, Contemporary Theologies, Ecological Theology, Ethics, Experimental Learning and Theological Education, History of Christianity, History of Theology, Justice and Peace, Marriage and the Family, Mysticism and Politics, Philosophy of Religion, Symbol, Ritual, and Sacrament, Psychology and Religion, The Role of Affectivity in Theology, Consultation on Roman Catholic Modernism, Scripture, Spirituality, Theology of the Church, Women and Religion, and World Religions. PUBLICATIONS Members of the CTS receive Horizons, the Society's journal, and the Annual Volume. Horizons, published semi-annually at Villanova University, offers scholarly articles, editorials, a creative teaching section, and over 60 book reviews. The Annual Volume contains exceptional scholarly articles on the theme of the Annual Convention. Subscriptions to both Horizons and the Annual Volume are included in the membership dues. MEMBERSHIP The CTS offers the following types of membership: Full Professorial Membership - Open to those who teach theology/religious studies on the college or university level and who hold graduate degrees in these disciplines. The dues are $50 for Full Professional Membership and $50 for Joint Professional Membership (husband and wife).
