North American Association
for the Study of Religion

The North American Association for the Study of Religion was initially formed in 1985 to encourage the historical, comparative, structural, theoretical and cognitive study of religion among North American scholars; to represent North American scholars of religion at the international level; and to sustain communication between North American scholars and their international colleagues engaged in the study of religion.

In order to achieve these goals, NAASR affiliated with the the CSSR and established annual meetings together with the American Academy of Religion on the one hand, and the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion on the other. NAASR has affiliated with the International Association for the History of Religions, and is the only organization from the United States that enjoys such affiliation. NAASR has hosted regional and international meetings as well as ongoing working groups and has arranged for a variety of publications including books.

PUBLICATIONS

NAASR's official quarterly, peer-review journal, Method and Theory in the Study of Religion, is published quarterly by E. J. Brill of The Netherlands. The editor is Jeffery Ruff.

Subscription to the journal is separate from membership (though members receive a 30% discount) and may be obtained directly from the E. J. Brill Press in the Netherlands. The Press may be reached at .

NAASR also sponsors a book series, "Key Thinkers in the Study of Religion," published by Equinox Publishers of the UK. Key Thinkers is a series of compact introductions to the life and work of major figures in the study of religion. Each volume discusses a single thinker, with a brief biography, analyses of key works, evaluations of criticisms, and discussions of subsequent impacts and influences. Critical engagement with major works will make each volume a useful companion for the study of these primary sources in the field. Aimed at the undergraduate and introductory graduate classrooms, the series aims to encapsulate and evaluate foundational contributions to the academic study of religion.
